Health Alert: U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru

Event: Updates to Government of Peru Quarantine and Movement Restrictions (February 14, 2022)
On February 13, 2022, the Government of Peru announced the extension of emergency self-quarantine and movement restrictions due to COVID-19, effective through Sunday, February 27, 2022.
The national level health emergency has been extended for an additional 90 days until March 1, 2022.
The Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima remains open, and domestic land and air transportation continue with reduced occupancy in all other regions of the country (see additional restrictions below).
From November 15, 2021, all passengers older than 18 years of age using commercial transportation to travel between provinces by land must present proof of vaccination to travel (as of January 27, 2022, individuals 40 and older must have received their booster). If they are not fully vaccinated, they must present a molecular test with a negative result (within 48 hours) prior to boarding their commercial transport.
From December 10, 2021, in all provinces of Peru, adults over the age of 18 must show proof of vaccination to enter enclosed spaces (locations consisting of economic activity and/or places of worship). They may show their physical or virtual vaccination card demonstrating they have completed their COVID-19 vaccination travel (as of January 27, 2022, individuals 40 and older must have received their booster). In the case of restaurants, masks can only be removed when eating or drinking.
From December 10, 2021, all employees working on-site at their place of employment must have completed their vaccination against COVID-19.
Land Travel Restrictions:
- During this national emergency all Peruvian land borders will be closed to non-resident foreigners to mitigate the risk of transmission of COVID-19. Peruvian citizens and residents will be able to travel into Peru via land.
Air Travel Restrictions:
- Peruvians, resident foreigners, and non-resident foreigners 12 years of age or older must present proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to boarding at their point of origin. Peruvians, resident foreigners, and non-resident foreigners 12 years of age or older who are not fully vaccinated must present a molecular test with a negative result (within 48 hours) prior to boarding an incoming flight to Peru, in accordance with current health regulations. Children under 12 years of age must only be asymptomatic prior to boarding an incoming flight to Peru.
- From December 15, 2021, all passengers older than 18 years of age using commercial transportation to travel domestically via air must present proof of vaccination to travel. If they are not fully vaccinated, they must present a molecular test with a negative result (within 48 hours) prior to boarding their domestic flight (as of January 27, 2022, individuals 40 and older must have received their booster).
As of February 14, the following provinces are considered “High Alert”: Abancay, Andahuaylas, Arequipa, Bagua, Cajamarca, Cañete, Chachapoyas, Chiclayo, Cusco, Huamanga, Huancavelica, Huancayo, Huánuco, Huarua, Ica, Jaén, Lambayeque, Leoncio Prado, Maynas, Nazca, Pisco, Piura, Puno, San Martín, San Román, Santa, Sullana, Tacna, Tambopata, Trujillo, Utcubamba.
All other provinces of Peru, including Lima and Callao, are considered as “Moderate Alert.”
In order to use the beaches, rivers, lakes, and public and private pools, it’s mandatory to show proof of vaccination, and beginning January 27, 2022, individuals 40 and older must have received their booster.
Additional Details for High Alert levels:
- Pharmacy delivery is available 24 hours. Taking taxis and public transportation is allowed.
- Monday – Sunday, supermarkets and grocery stores are open at 50% occupancy. Restaurants are open at 50% occupancy. Banks are open at 60% occupancy. Salons, spas, and barbershops at 50% occupancy by appointment. Casinos, gyms, movie theaters, churches are open at 40% occupancy.
Additional Details for Moderate Alert levels:
- Pharmacy delivery is available 24 hours. Taking taxis and public transportation is allowed.
- Beaches are open.
- Monday – Sunday, supermarkets and grocery stores are open at 80% occupancy. Restaurants are open at 80-100% occupancy. Banks are open at 80% occupancy. Salons, spas, and barbershops at 60% occupancy by appointment. Churches are open at 80% occupancy. Casinos, gyms, and movie theaters are open at 60% occupancy.

Actions to Take:
- KN95 masks are required. If you do not have a KN95, double masking is mandatory, with one of the masks being a surgical mask, with a cloth mask on top.
- Monitor local media for updates. Movement restrictions may be changed unexpectedly and with very short notice.
- Always wear your mask outside. Face masks are required by Peruvian law. You may be fined if you do not wear one or do not comply with curfew and quarantine regulations. There are currently no exceptions for vaccinated individuals.
- Wash your hands frequently, and respect social distancing guidelines.
- Carry a photo ID.
