With Gov. Mike Parson declaring the COVID-19 crisis over in Missouri, Springfield-Greene County Health Department has outlined its updated response in a press release.
As of Thursday afternoon, Greene County has seen 71,124 positive COVID-19 cases — 166 of which are currently active — and 737 deaths related to COVID-19. A little over half of the population — 54.4% — has been fully vaccinated.
The health department is now viewing the novel coronavirus as an endemic — or regularly present — disease, similar to influenza or HIV.
“As we move to an endemic response, Springfield-Greene County Health is committed to providing guidance and education so individuals and families can continue protecting themselves and others from this serious disease,” the press release said.

The health department will monitor the presence of new variants, and will continue testing and vaccination efforts.
Additionally, the department’s epidemiology team “will provide guidance with a focus on vulnerable populations and monitoring potential outbreaks to reduce community spread in Greene County.”

Though Greene County is a low community impact level for COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, citizens should continue to get tested after exposure, stay home when they’re experiencing symptoms and stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines.
“Vaccination continues to be the best way for people to protect themselves and their families against these possible surges of COVID-19, so we urge everyone to get vaccinated and get their booster dose as soon as they are eligible,” the press release said.
