Breaking News: Dwayne Haskins Tragically Dies in South Florida this Morning – SteelerNation.com – Steeler Nation

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins died this morning at the age of 24 when he was hit by another vehicle in South Florida, as reported by Adam Schefter through his agent Cedric Saunders.

Haskins was in Florida to meet up with new teammate Mitchell Trubisky, and several of their other teammates to get some practice work in. The teammates spent Friday working out, and getting to know Trubisky, who recently signed with the team. It’s being reported that Haskins was traveling on I-595 on his way to the airport to return to Pittsburgh when he pulled over onto the side of the road. Haskins was outside of the car when a dump truck struck Haskins and killed him.

Haskins had all of the potential in the world when he became the 6th quarterback in FBS history to throw for 50 touchdowns in 2018.  To go along with his gaudy 4831 passing yards (15th all time in FBS when he was drafted) and 70% completion percentage. Haskins also showed off some mobility adding 108 yards rushing and 4 more touchdowns on the ground as the leader of The Ohio State University football team.

Haskins was drafted #15 overall by the team now known as the Washington Commanders and became the starter in Week 9 of his rookie season.  When drafted, it appeared that the organization was split on him being the franchise quarterback.  Due to a contentious front office’s and head strong coaching staff, Haskins played for 3 different head coaches in his first 2 seasons.  Haskins was ultimately released by the team, in a move that rarely occurs for a first round quarterback on their rookie contract.

The Steelers signed Haskins in the 2021 offseason to compete with Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs as the backup to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.  Haskins showed his athleticism in the preseason by leading all quarterbacks in scoring drives and the team finished with a 3-1 record before the start of the regular season .  His performance was impressive enough to earn him a spot on the roster as the 3rd quarterback.  Haskins was active for only one game last year, serving as the backup in the tie against the Detroit Lions during Rudolph’s only start.

This season the Steelers tendered Haskins to his original round Restricted Free Agent tender that could have potentially netted a first round draft pick if another team tried to sign him.  Haskins was ready to compete with Trubisky and Rudolph for the starting quarterback position this season, as the front office and coaching staff mentioned multiple times that the job was up for grabs.

Mike Tomlin, who always believed in Haskins’ athleticism had these words to offer about Dwayne Haskins as a man and teammate.

General Manager candidate Louis Riddick released offered some kind words about Haskins and his potential:

G.Stryker and Louis Riddick discussed the talents of Dwayne Haskins before the start of the season.  Watch and listen to what Riddick had to say about this young, talented quarterback:
