Frazee to get new fitness center May 1 – Detroit Lakes Tribune

FRAZEE — Frazee residents have been requesting a workout facility in the city for years, and that request will finally be fulfilled on Sunday, May 1, when the Frazee Fitness Center opens.

The former bowling alley in downtown Frazee has been renovated into a fitness center that will include commercial grade equipment, such as treadmills, elliptical machines, a row machine, free weights and more. Many of the stationary machines face flat-screen TVs to help occupy the mind while exercising the body.

Todd Johnson, owner of the fitness center, said he spoke with the building’s owner, Tim Conklin, about opening the center and the two Frazee residents looked at a few locations together before deciding the best option would be the one at 106 West Main Avenue.

However, renovations were needed. While the bowling lanes had long been removed from the facility, it needed more walls and new flooring. When the work was completed, Johnson had created a separate space within the building for the workout facility. New coats of paint were put up to give the Frazee Fitness Center a theme to go along with the school district’s colors of green, black and white.

While renovations were being made back in January, Johnson began purchasing gym equipment and contemplating the competitive plans he could offer for memberships. He decided to provide a plan to suit all needs, from one month to three months for summer residents. Six months and annual memberships are also offered, with the pricing becoming more of a bargain the longer the plan. He also decided to offer special pricing for students, and different rates for adults, couples and families.

Johnson also offers a 10 percent discount for military service members and veterans, as well as senior citizens.

The Frazee Fitness Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Plans are in place to install a keyless entry system in the future.

“Once I get and install the key fob, it will be open 24/7 (to members),” Johnson said. “Until then, there is a deadbolt with a combo on it.”
